Literacy is of paramount importance for strong families. When parents are literate and read to their children, the children become readers from an early age; when mothers and fathers can read food labels and follow prescriptions, the health of the whole family improves; and when a parent can read and write well enough to have a productive job, the family can be economically self-sufficient. Literacy makes both families and communities stronger.

Mrs. Laura Bush
